The door to the building closes at 7 pm sharp, so please come in time and allow some time for parking. Gold coin donation. Milk: His life changed history. His courage changed lives. This film is based on the inspiring true story of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to major public office in the USA, and his fight for gay rights. Harvey Milk stood above all for the right of gay men and lesbians to exist alongside their fellow citizens without fear or shame. Sean Penn, with great wit, charm and skill plays Harvey Milk a 40-year-old insurance agent living in New York. Gay men like Harvey are still being arrested in gay bars so he has to be careful whom he picks up in the subway. Luckily, on his birthday, he finds Scott Smith (James Franco) who is willing to travel across the country with him to start something new in San Francisco. Together they open a camera shop on Castro, in the heart of the gay community. But even here, homosexuals are treated as second-class citizens, and Harvey decides to run for office to try to change things and in doing so galvanizes the gay community of San Francisco.
